Capital Kids Connection, a longtime volunteer nonprofit that helps foster families in Thurston and Mason counties, now needs some help of its own.
The organization lost some grant funding that paid for storage in the Tumwater area, which means the nonprofit needs a new place to store donated items for foster children.
These items include school supplies, coats, shoes, clothes, sports equipment, Christmas gifts and graduation gifts, said Jean Boone, a foster parent liaison/recruiter with an organization called Olive Crest that has worked closely with Capital Kids Connection.
Boone, 47, of Hoodsport, also has used Capital Kids Connection for her own foster children, she said.
Capital Kids Connection’s operations are in jeopardy without the storage space, Boone said.
“It is vital to the well being of foster kids,” she said.
The good news is that there is a plan, and fundraising is underway, to build two, 200-square-foot storage sheds on donated property, eliminating the need to pay rent, Boone said.
She estimates that one storage shed costs $3,000, although it might cost as little as $1,000 if someone were to donate building materials, Boone said.
Capital Kids President Jenn Myrick added that they also need boxes, volunteers to help move and a truck to move all of the donated items out of the Tumwater storage and into the new storage.
"We have two huge storage units (in Tumwater) and industrial shelving that has to be taken down and set up," Myrick said.
So far, Capital Kids has raised $500 from Olympia Host Lions Club, $300 from the Community Foundation of South Puget Sound -- which will be used to pay the rent on the existing Tumwater-area storage through the end of August -- and a $40 private donation.
Capital Kids expects to build and complete the new storage shed in August, Boone said.
