A telephone scam that targets restaurants has surfaced in Thurston County, the county Public Health and Social Services Department said.
The scam typically involves one or more phone calls in which a person claiming to be a health inspector tries to set up an in-person restaurant inspection, or to seek business and personal data about restaurant staff.
One such scam artist threatened a major fine unless the restaurant cooperated, officials said.
“Thurston County Health does not call ahead before an inspection,” said Sammy Berg, senior environmental health specialist. A restaurant worker who gets a suspicious call should call the Health Department at 360-867-2667.
