TUMWATER - Eat at Meconi's Italian Subs in Tumwater these days and the sandwich you ordered might be made, served or delivered by Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald and Fitzgerald, triplets who work at the restaurant.
The sisters are Breda, Becky and Sarah, born March 3, 1986. Breda and Becky are identical twins and Sarah is a fraternal triplet.
Breda, who has worked at the Tumwater location the longest, said the sisters, who also like to carpool together, usually try to help each other find jobs, but this is the first time that all three have worked at the same place. First Breda was hired, followed by Sarah, then Becky, she said.
Doing the hiring was restaurant manager Robin Vaughn, who praised all three as good employees, although sometimes customers will do a double-take when seeing the identical twins and the staff at times have been confused, she said. Even Vaughn has been confused.
“Robin’s called me Breda before,” said Becky.
Breda said the sisters do a little of everything at Meconi’s: They make sandwiches, work on the grill, operate the meat slicer and make deliveries. Sometimes all three work side by side, Becky said.
“It’s normal,” said Breda. “People think we’re going to have problems with it (working together) but we’re really best friends. We don’t steal each other’s clothes anymore so it’s not a big problem.”
Becky agreed that working with her sisters was better than she thought it would be and she now appreciates the comfort zone. “If you’re mad, you can tell them you’re mad,” she said.
Becky also said it’s interesting to see what kind of workers her sisters are.
“They’re great or else we’d kill each other by now,” she said.
Sarah said the other benefit of working with Breda and Becky is that it made their on-the-job training that much easier. “Breda trained me and I trained Becky,” she said.
Unlike job training with someone you don’t know, Sarah felt more comfortable being trained by her sister because she could ask questions about the job.
“You make friends at work but this way you already have the friendships before you start,” she said.
The Tumwater Meconi’s is at 111 Tumwater Blvd. S.E.
