Damp weather last week slowed construction at Point Ruston near Point Defiance Park, delaying work on utilities crossing Ruston Way.
That translates to a week’s delay in the reopening of the road’s historic Ruston Tunnel. Originally set to reopen Friday, the tunnel is now scheduled to be closed until Sept. 24.
The tunnel, which carried traffic under part of the former Asarco copper mill, eventually will be filled with lightly contaminated soil from the smelter site. A new boulevard through the billion-dollar mixed use development will replace the tunnel route.
