Airlines' attempt to raise airfares $10 per round trip earlier this week has failed as major carriers pulled back the hike on computer sales systems.
The failure of most cut-rate carriers to join the larger, legacy carriers apparently discouraged those carriers from pushing on with the hikes.
United and Continental, now part of the same holding company, floated the increase Friday, and most major carriers joined in over the weekend. The price hike attempt was the 10th since the year began. Six have succeeded.
