What started as a fun way to spend a Saturday blew up on Facebook. Now, Tumwater officials are preparing for an extra busy day at Pioneer Park tomorrow.
Cameron Bluhm of Centralia wanted to organize a floating party along the Deschutes River in Tumwater starting at Pioneer Park. Bluhm, who owns Sound Dragon Wedding DJ, posted the event on Facebook and listed the DJ business as host.
“It was simply an idea we posted on Facebook and for some reason everyone started sharing it,” he told The Olympian.
Bluhm said he organized a floating party last year with about 50 people. This time, more than 1,000 people said they were going and another 9,000 said they were interested, according to Bluhm. Pretty soon he was getting calls from Tumwater officials, including the police chief.
Never miss a local story.
“That’s an extremely popular activity and Pioneer Park is generally full on the weekends when it’s nice out,” said Chuck Denney, director of Tumwater Parks and Recreation. “Adding an event like this, we don’t have the infrastructure to handle all those extra people.”
Bluhm deleted the event on Facebook, but soon a similar event posting popped up. By Friday afternoon, more than 200 people said they planned to attend.
Denney said police will be at the park on Saturday to look for illegal parking and enforce the park’s no alcohol policy.
“We just want to eliminate as many problems as we can,” he said. “We’ll try to make the best of it.”
