One firefighter was taken to the hospital as crews battled a 3-acre brush fire off Highway 12 near Rochester Monday evening, according to West Thurston Regional Fire Authority.
Crews were dispatched shortly after 5 p.m. to the fire that was threatening 12 homes. Highway 12 was closed as crews battled the fire that in the end destroyed one outbuilding.
The firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and dehydration.
Crews from Thurston, Lewis and Grays Harbor counties responded, along with the state’s Department of Natural Resources.
DNR will lead the investigation into the fire, according to Capt. Lanette Dyer of West Thurston Fire.
