Jeffry C. Wachter, 59, of Malone, died of a gunshot wound to the head. The coroner called his death a suicide.
According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and fire personnel were dispatched to the 600 block of Tennessee Road at about 4:15 p.m. Sunday to help a 63-year-old woman who had fallen into a 50-foot well while she was trying to add chlorine to it. She was rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment.
During the rescue, her two brothers showed up and began to argue. Jeffry Wachter was asked to leave, which he did. Authorities say he returned at about 6:30 p.m. with a handgun and shot his younger brother multiple times before shooting himself.
