The Department of Corrections and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of an inmate who was found hanging in his cell Thursday morning at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton.
Michael Gilstrap, 58, was found by correctional officers at 5 a.m. The officers began CPR but were unable to revive him, according to the Department of Corrections. Medics pronounced Gilstrap dead at 5:29 a.m.
Prison administrators contacted the Sheriff’s Office, which sent detectives to conduct an investigation. The DOC will conduct an internal review.
Gilstrap was serving a five-year sentence for second-degree assault of a child. He arrived at the Washington Corrections Center on May 20.
