A woman drowned Saturday night in the Puyallup River near Sumner.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Shannon Hunter, 33. An autopsy will be conducted today.
Dispatchers received a call about a person in the river just after 9 p.m., and Pierce County sheriff’s deputies, a State Patrol team and rescue crews from East Pierce and Central Pierce Fire responded.
Spokesman Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said that Hunter and friends had been on the shore tossing cans of beer to rafters in the 9600 block of McCutcheon Road East. Some of the cans went in the water, and Hunter went in to retrieve them. Troyer said it appears that she lost her footing and floated off. She was not wearing a life jacket.
An overhead search was conducted, and heat sensors detected a body. The woman’s body was recovered from the river around the 7500 block of Riverside Road, about two miles down the river from where she went in.
No foul play is suspected, Troyer said.
