Drivers using northbound Interstate 5 in Fife this weekend will face major traffic delays.
Weather permitting, the state Department of Transportation and its contractor, Tri-State Construction Inc., intended to close some lanes on northbound I-5 Friday night and keep them closed through 4 a.m. Monday, beginning near the 54th Avenue interchange.
During the closures, crews will reconstruct the expansion joint across the center of the northbound West Hylebos Creek Bridge. The work is needed to widen I-5 and open HOV lanes in Fife in October.
To ease some of the congestion expected by this closure, crews will stripe and open the newly paved northbound I-5 car-pool lane to all traffic. This will keep two northbound lanes open overnight and three northbound lanes open during daytime hours.
Never miss a local story.
Drivers are asked to plan around these closures, choose an alternate route and avoid traveling on northbound I-5 from 3-5 p.m. today and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.
About 87,000 vehicles use this stretch of I-5 each day, the department said.
