More than 1,100 vehicles used the new Mounts Road gate to get onto Joint Base Lewis-McChord when it first opened Monday, the base reported.
The gate is intended to relieve some traffic congestion at the base’s other 15 gates and in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 from Thurston County into Pierce County.
Motorists have been complaining that their morning commutes have doubled between Lacey and DuPont in recent months as 18,000 soldiers returned to the base.
The gate is open from 5 to 8 on weekday mornings to authorized personnel. Drivers must provide Department of Defense identification and a JBLM registration decal on their vehicles.
