A couple with Tumwater roots were killed last Saturday after being struck by a vehicle while taking a walk in Pismo Beach, Calif.
Bruce Mallin, 63, and his wife, Marjorie, 59, were killed when a vehicle drove through a chain-link fence separating U.S. Highway 101 and Price Street, eventually striking the couple as they walked on the sidewalk, according to a Pismo Beach Police Department news release.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver, 19-year-old Jerardo Iriarte, intentionally veered off the highway, according to Pismo police. He was arrested on two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail, with bail set at $50,000.
The couple were avid travelers and had been living on the road in their motor home since 2008, according to their online travel journal.
