Lewis County will take over operation of Vader's water system under terms of a court order issued Oct. 29 in an effort to resolve a publichealth threat, according to a news release . Also according to the release:
Nine hundred and twenty people who live in and near the small south Lewis County town have experienced chronic water outages because of broken pipes in the town’s aging water system. The city doesn’t have the money to rehabilitate the system.
The state departments of Health and Commerce worked with the city and county to identify potential solutions. The city asked the Department of Health to petition Lewis County Superior Court to temporarily transfer ownership of its water system to the county.
A team organized under the state’s Small Communities Initiative helped the city and county through the process . The team helped Lewis County get about $1.3 million in grants and low-interest loans to pay for the repairs.
