OLYMPIA - Ruby Butler of Lacey gave birth to the first baby of the year in Thurston County, a girl named Riska Kay-Jane Butler. She was born at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, weighing in at 8 pounds, 9 ounces, Ruby Butler's grandmother Virginia Farr of Lacey said.
Ruby Butler was resting Saturday with her baby at the family birth center at Providence St. Peter Hospital and had been joined by other family members, including her mother and father, aunts and another grandmother, Farr said.
“She’s doing very well,” Farr said about Ruby. “I’m very proud of her.”
While the baby girl arrived early in 2011, it was not a short journey. Butler, 15, arrived at Providence about 7:30 a.m. Friday but gave birth to her first child almost 18 hours later.
Never miss a local story.
Ruby said she was hoping her baby would be born on New Year’s Day. “I’m happy, extremely happy,” Butler said.
The hospital gave her a basket of goodies, including stuffed animals, baby socks and baby washcloths.
A nursing supervisor said Capital Medical Center did not have a New Year’s baby as of 6 p.m. Saturday.
