South Sound Democrats plan a celebration of the life of former Thurston County commissioner and advocate Linda Medcalf on Sunday.
Medcalf died Dec. 15 after suffering from cancer, according to the Thurston County Democratic Party’s announcement of her memorial. It is set for 1:30 p.m. at the Lacey Presbyterian Church, 3045 Carpenter Road S.E. A reception will follow at the Women’s Club, 1002 Washington St. S.E., Olympia.
Medcalf, 66, held a doctorate in political science from the University of Washington and was active in numerous Democratic causes over several decades – serving as county Democratic chairwoman in 1990-91 and as a county commissioner in 1992.
She had participated in several political campaigns and served as a staffer for the state House and Senate campaign committees, as the field director for the state abortion-rights initiative, and as the executive director of the YMCA Youth in Government Program. More recently, she taught political science at South Puget Sound Community College and wrote “Law and Identity: Native Americans, Lawyers, and the Legal Process” and “Neopolitics: American Political Ideas.”
