The small town of Rainier, Ore., is trying to cope with the shooting death of its popular police chief.
The Daily News of Longview said many pastors in the town 40 miles north of Portland held sermons Sunday on the death of Chief Ralph Painter. He died in a shootout Wednesday outside a car stereo store. A 21-yearold Kalama man, Daniel Armaugh Butts, was being held without bail after being arraigned Friday on a charge of aggravated murder.
A candlelight vigil was held Sunday evening at Rainier City Hall, and community groups plan benefit dinners to raise money for Painter’s family.
