Lacey Deputy Mayor Virgil Clarkson was recognized Thursday night for reaching leadership regent status with the National League of Cities.
He was awarded the diamond status in the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership program by City of Kenmore Mayor David Baker, a board member for the NLC.
Clarkson, who is in his fifth term on the council and served as mayor from 2004-07, was one of more than 1,200 leaders enrolled in the certificate program as of August, according to the National League of Cities website.
Leaders receive credits for attending seminars, national leadership summits and regional training programs, each of which focus on competency areas that teach skills such as leadership theory, technical skills and innovation. To reach the diamond level, Clarkson completed 80 credits, with two credits earned for every four hours of training.
