The search for a Seattle woman who is believed to have become lost in the Red Mountain area near Alpental while back-country skiing was temporarily called off Wednesday night, according to the King County Sheriff's Office.
The woman, who has not been identified, went skiing alone. Searchers were called in Wednesday after another skier found her backpack and a glove in an area with fresh snowslide activity.
Identification in the woman’s backpack indicated that she was supposed to have been at work Wednesday, but she did not show up. Her car was found in a ski area parking lot adjacent to Interstate 90.
A sheriff’s helicopter surveyed the area and saw ski gear in the slide area near the backside of Red Mountain. Searchers have not yet been able to reach the area because it “is extremely treacherous and difficult to reach,” spokesman John Urquhart wrote in a news release.
The search is expected to resume this morning.
