A group that opposes Thurston County's proposed critical-areas ordinance update will hold a town hall meeting this weekend in Rochester.
STOP – Stop Taking our Property – Thurston County, a project of the Freedom Foundation, will host a meeting at 6 p.m. Sunday at Swede Hall, 18543 Albany St. S.W. The Freedom Foundation claims the county has not been forthright with property owners about the effects of the update. It plans to hold several town hall meetings over the next few months, according to a news release.
The county’s planning department, which refutes the foundation’s stance on the update, held several open houses, offered to meet with concerned groups and residents and has dedicated a section of its website to inform residents about the proposed changes and what it means to property owners who want to develop land, according to its director.
Some controversial aspects of the ordinance include development of sensitive areas, buffer setbacks, prairie habitat and species that live in that habitat.
