OLYMPIA - The man found dead early Saturday on the beach south of Rotary Park in the 700 block of West Bay Drive has been identified as Doy "Marty" Pierce, 32, of Olympia. His cause of death was drowning, according to Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock.
Warnock said Pierce’s manner of death is undetermined. Olympia Police Sgt. Dan Smith said Monday that investigators are trying to determine how Pierce ended up in the water. Warnock said based on preliminary information from Pierce’s autopsy, he was in the water “less than a day” before he was found in the water by a kayaker about 10 a.m. Saturday.
Anyone with information about Pierce’s activities in the hours or days before he died is strongly encouraged to call Olympia Police Detective Chris Johnstone at 360-709-2793, Smith said.
“What we don’t know is how he got in the water,” Smith said.
Olympia Police Chief Ronnie Roberts said Monday that so far, there is no evidence to suggest that Pierce is a homicide victim.
Warnock said toxicology results that will tell whether Pierce was under the influence of alcohol or narcotics at the time of his death won’t be available for six to eight weeks. Pierce maintained an address in Olympia, but Warnock did not have the street number Monday afternoon.
