A Thurston County sheriff's lieutenant helped carry a man out of a burning home Sunday after he discovered a residential fire in the Nisqually Pines development north of Yelm.
Lt. Mike Ware noticed smoke billowing from the eaves of a detached twocar garage adjacent to a single-story residence while patrolling Sorbus Court Southeast.
Ware notified dispatchers of the fire and then tried to alert the home’s occupants. The resident, a man in his 70s who uses a wheelchair, was in the back of the house but was unaware of the fire. The man’s son was asleep in the home.
Because wheelchair access to the home was blocked by the growing fire, Ware and the man’s son carried him out through another doorway as fire department units arrived.
Never miss a local story.
Responding firefighters put out the fire, limiting damage to the garage. There was also charring and smoke damage to the main residence. The man’s specially equipped van also was a total loss.
