A 22-year-old man found dead early Monday morning beneath the Capitol Boulevard Bridge that spans Interstate 5 has been identified as Matthew R. Fayton of Lacey, according to Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock.
An investigation determined that he either fell or jumped , Warnock said. There was no evidence that he was struck by a vehicle, and authorities are in the process of ruling it a suicide, he said.
State Patrol troopers arrived at the scene about 2:15 a.m. after receiving reports that someone was lying on the shoulder of northbound I-5 . Medical personnel pronounced the man dead, according to trooper Guy Gill. No witnesses have stepped forward, he said.
The bridge – which rises above I-5 an average of 67 feet and is maintained by the state Department of Transportation – has been the location of at least five fatalities in as many years, according to The Olympian’s archives.
