A Milton man who hit a teenage girl with his van last spring, killing her, was sentenced Friday to four years in prison.
Robert V. Mitzel, 48, previously pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly accident in the April 28 death of Kelsey Parrett, 15.
Parrett and a friend were walking along 15th Avenue near Juniper Street about 9 p.m. when Mitzel, who lived nearby, struck the girl. Parrett’s friend was not injured.
Mitzel drove his van to his home a few blocks away before returning to the scene on foot.
Milton police reported Mitzel smelled of alcohol, his speech was slurred and his eyes watery when they interviewed him that night, according to court records.
Parrett w a s a ninth-grader at Fife’s Columbia Junior High School.
Many of her classmates as well as her parents and other relatives and friends crammed into Pierce County Superior Court Judge Ronald Culpepper’s courtroom for Mitzel’s sentencing, deputy prosecutor Tim Jones said.
Parrett’s mother and stepfather, as well as the girl who was with her the night she died, addressed the court, Jones said.
Mitzel also had supporters in the courtroom, and others sent letters on his behalf, the deputy prosecutor said.
