Olympia City Council member Stephen Buxbaum made the capital city’s mayoral race a formal three-way contest Tuesday.
Buxbaum filed his candidacy, joining fellow council member Karen Rogers and former radio personality Dick Pust, both of whom filed Monday. Mayor Doug Mah is stepping down after his term expires.
Tuesday was the second day of a weeklong filing period for local-government offices in Thurston County and the state’s other 38 counties. The primary election is Aug. 16; the general election is Nov. 8.
In another Olympia matchup, state employee Nathaniel Jones filed Monday evening to run against City Council member Rhenda Strub, who also had filed for Position 3.
And in Tenino, Mayor Ken Jones drew challenger Eric Strawn.

Bucoda – Gary M. Givens, Town Council Position 2.
Olympia – Stephen Buxbaum, mayor. Nathaniel Jones, City Council Position 3.
Rainier – Dennis C. McVey, City Council Position 4.
Tenino – Eric Strawn, mayor. Dawna Kelley-Donohue, City Council Position 2.
Thurston County fire commissioners – Southeast Thurston Fire Authority Subregion 3, Clinton R. Farmer, Position 2.
Grand Mound – Cemetery District No. 1, Marc S. Spiegelberg, Position 3.
In Mason County, new filers since 5 p.m. Monday included:
Public Hospital District 2 commissioner – Frank McDonald, Belfair, Position 1 (2-year unexpired term); Kaye Massie, Belfair, Position 4 (6-year term).
Southside School District – Laurie A. Cox, Shelton, board Position 2.
Shelton School District – Caroline Rich, board District 1; Cheryl Williams and Sharon Donaldson, board District 2.
