Pierce County prosecutors have accused a member of the U.S. Army of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl they said he met online while deployed to Afghanistan. Glen Winans, 47, of Lakewood, was charged with second-degree rape of a child, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Bail was set at $100,000. Joint Base Lewis-McChord confirmed Monday that he was a soldier there. He told Lakewood police detectives he had recently returned from the deployment, according to charging papers.
Prosecutors gave this account:
Winans met the girl in-person for the first time a month ago in Kelso, after communicating with her via meetme.com for several months.
The teen told Winans she was 15. The two first met after Winans drove to the girl’s home. He took her to a see a movie, and they had sex that night.
On Oct. 25, Winans picked up the girl at her home and took her to his Lakewood home, where they again had sex and the girl stayed the night. The next day a waitress at a Lakewood cafe called police after she overheard Winans tell the 13-year-old he liked young girls.
The teen told officers she and Winans had had sex, and he was arrested at the restaurant.
According to charging papers, he told detectives “he did not like women in their 30s and 40s because they are typically out of shape and overweight.”
