The Lacey City Council Thursday night approved a conditional use permit for Verizon Wireless, allowing the carrier to move forward with building a 120-foot cell tower in the 8000 block of Martin Way near Marvin Road.
After a presentation from associate planner Samra Seymour about the conditional use permit, and a couple of questions from the council about the tower, including whether other carriers will be able to use it — yes, they will — the council approved the permit.
Afterward, Madeline Chaney of Seattle, hired to do the leasing and zoning for such structures, said the tower is needed to improve wireless capacity and coverage gaps in the area.
Once Verizon has its building permit, which is being processed by the city, it takes about 30 days to build the tower. The company is leasing the property for its tower from Public Storage, a business that operates a mini-storage facility on the same site, she said.
Also Thursday night:
• During public comment, five employees with Behavioral Health Resources, who also are represented by the Service International Employees Union 1199NW, shared their concerns about the organization. They said they are concerned about what they called “continued mismanagement” of the organization and that contract negotiations are at an impasse. The Olympian reported this month that BHR, a multicounty provider of mental health and addiction recovery services, is struggling financially.
• The council approved a resolution to accept a document called, “Creating places, Preserving Spaces: A sustainable development plan for the Thurston Region.” The document will be used to frame the city’s local planning efforts.
