The southbound Interstate 5 ramp to US Highway 101 will be closed from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 18) while tow trucks remove a semitrailer from a ravine, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
During the ramp closure, drivers can access US 101 via the Tumwater Boulevard interchange south of Olympia.
The truck landed in the ravine just before midnight on Monday after the driver fell asleep at the wheel, said Trooper Guy Gill, of the Washington State Patrol. The truck had been traveling southbound on I-5 when it crashed through the guardrail and eventually came to a stop 70 feet from the roadway.
“He just went right through the guardrail,” Gill said. “We’re talking about a fully-loaded semi.”
The driver wasn’t injured, and no other vehicles were involved in the collision, Gill said. The driver was cited for negligent driving.
