Thurston County Commissioners are looking for volunteers to serve on the newly formed Treatment Sales Tax Advisory Committee.
Applicants must be Thurston County residents, have no interest in any organization that receives Treatment Sales Tax funds, willing to learn about services for people with mental health or substance abuse issues and able to understand strategic plans.
The seven-member committee will provide funding recommendations on how to use Treatment Sales Tax funding during the county’s budget process. It raises about $4 million a year, according to program manager Barbara Burgener. Advisory committee members will be appointed by the commissioners, and serve staggered three-year terms.
In 2008, commissioners passed a one-tenth of 1 percent sales tax ordinance to increase funds for mental health and chemical dependency services and therapeutic services. In January, commissioners approved the release of $100,000 of the Treatment Sales Tax funds to create community grants.
