The American Legion Post No. 3 has selected Olympia Police Officer Jeff Herbig as its Officer of the Year.
Herbig was honored at Tuesday’s Olympia City Council meeting. He received a plaque and a check for $500. Herbig chose to donate the money to the Olympia Cops and Kids Foundation, a nonprofit organization that focuses on youth development programs.
Herbig has distinguished himself through his work with the downtown walking patrol, which was restored in 2013. Councilman Steve Langer said Herbig has set the standard for other officers by working well with the people downtown, and is regarded as someone who listens to people while making it clear that “certain behaviors are not acceptable.”
“You’ve been a really important part of getting that (program) started on the right foot,” Langer said.
Never miss a local story.
American Legion member Dave Gedrose presented the second annual award as part of a renewed tradition. The post sponsors several community programs that support veterans, first responders, local youth and the homeless.
