The Community Foundation of South Puget Sound has selected a single proposal for funding after receiving its second round of Environmental Initiative grant proposals.
The funded initiative will build upon the Farms to Market Assessment completed in 2013 with $24,500 awarded to a group of projects in Lewis, Thurston and Mason counties.
The initiative focuses on three priorities: preserving land for farming, matching farmers with available land, and expanding farm production and sales to local institutional buyers.
Funds will be used to develop farmer/land connections, create a guide featuring financing and other resources for small and midsize producers, and sponsor regional food events.
The events include an “Anchoring Local Food” forum in October and a “Farm to Fork” event in December. Two additional events will be held next spring in Lewis and Mason counties to raise awareness about preserving land for farming and supporting institutional purchasing of local foods.
The initiative funds six partners under the leadership of Enterprise for Equity and the Thurston Conservation District.
