The Olympic Region Clean Air Agency has issued a stage one burn ban in Thurston County, effective 2 p.m. Saturday.
Under a stage one ban, burning is prohibited in fireplaces and uncertified wood stoves. All outdoor burning is also prohibited. No visible smoke is allowed from any fireplace, beyond a 20-minute startup period.
Thurston County has recently experienced a system of stable weather conditions and cold overnight temperatures. As a result, pollution levels have climbed enough to raise concerns about air quality and its effects on health.
A change of weather, which would restore air quality, is forecast for next week at the earliest.
