Vascular Plants of the South Sound: A lecture and book-signing in celebration of the release of a new field guide titled “Vascualr Plants of the South Sound Prairies.” More than 40 Evergreen State College students, scientists from Evergreen, Centralia College and the Center for Natural Lands Management made contributions to the project. Green Crab Science Café Awareness: The European green crab (Carcinus maenas), considered one of the world’s worst invasive species, is poised to enter Washington’s inland shoreline ecosystems. The workshop is 7 p.m. at Orca Books, 509 East Fourth Ave., Olympia. Flag Day celebration: Thurston County Veterans Council and Thurston County Realtors Association co-sponsor a Flag Day celebration at 4 p.m. at the Flag Pavilion in South Sound Mall parking lot, adjacent to Applebys. Olympia FD and LFD #3 will hoist a huge American flag. There will be an honor guard and a cannon salute.
Summer Guided Tours of the Schmidt House: The “Heritage Builders” history program of the Olympia Tumwater Foundation, with support from the City of Tumwater, will host free guided tours of Tumwater’s historic Schmidt House throughout the summer and fall. The tour schedule includes the public tours on the first Tuesday of each month and group tours are also available by appointment. Tours are limited to 15-20 people and take just over an hour. The tour requires negotiating stairways to three floors and the basement level. Tours are free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Doors open at 10:45 a.m. and the tour begins at 11 a.m. Call ahead 360-786-8117 or email at history@olytumfoundation.org to reserve a spot or to arrange a special group tour.
