LACEY - A 47-year-old Lacey man arranged on Facebook to meet a 13-year-old neighbor girl for sex at the Super 8 Hotel on College Street, but was instead arrested there Friday morning by detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, police said.day morning by detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, police said.
Mark J. Daniel, 47, of Lacey was in custody Friday at the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of attempted second-degree rape of a child and communicating with a minor for immoral purposes, said Thurston County sheriff’s Lt. Chris Mealy.
Daniel, who lives with his mother, is being held without bail, Mealy said.
According to Mealy:
Detectives set up a sting operation Thursday involving an officer who posed as the 13-year-old girl after the girl’s juvenile probation officer notified detectives that there was an inappropriate relationship.
The probation officer had been contacted by the girl’s parents, who were concerned because Daniel had befriended their daughter on the popular social networking website.
The 13-year-old girl refused to share her Facebook password with the juvenile probation officer, but a Thurston County Court commissioner ordered the 13-year-old to give it to her.
When the probation officer accessed the girl’s Facebook page, Daniel immediately logged on to chat with the girl.
After the probation officer contacted detectives Thursday, Thurston County sheriff’s detective Sgt. Cheryl Stines began to communicate with Daniel on Facebook, posing as the 13-year-old girl.
On Thursday, Daniel and Stines, posing as the 13-year-old, arranged to meet at the Super 8 Hotel on Friday. Mealy said that Daniel thought he was going to meet the 13-year-old for sex.
Daniel, who has no criminal history, is unemployed, Mealy said.
