A detainee who died at the Thurston County Jail on Friday night has been identified by the Thurston County Coroner as Blake C. Matthews, 41.
According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office:
About 10:45 p.m., a corrections officer saw Matthews standing on an upper bunk. When the officer attempted to talk with Matthews, he appeared to jump headfirst.
Corrections staff and a nurse provided aid and initiated CPR; medics were dispatched and continued CPR, but the man was pronounced dead.
Matthews had been arrested by Lacey police just after 9:30 p.m. Friday on suspicion of third-degree assault and a fourth-degree domestic violence warrant, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Cheryl Stines.
Matthews was in the intake area of the jail awaiting booking when the incident occurred, Stines said.
Matthews died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck, Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock said. Matthew’s manner of death is under investigation, Warnock added.
