A 19-year-old man charged with causing a fatal wreck while driving a stolen pickup near Nisqually pleaded not guilty Thursday.
Cody J. Coffinger is charged with second-degree murder, vehicular homicide, attempting to elude a police officer, possessing a stolen vehicle and leaving the scene of an injury accident in the Sept. 28 death of Williams Barnes Jr., 35.
Pierce County Superior Court Judge Gary Steiner ordered Coffinger jailed on $750,000 bail.
State troopers said Coffinger was speeding and driving recklessly on Interstate 5 when he lost control of the truck and crashed. Barnes, his passenger, was ejected and died at the scene.
Coffinger fled but was tracked down this week in Cowlitz County and arrested.
