Gov. Chris Gregoire plans to highlight her education reform ideas at a news conference in Olympia.
She will be joined by lawmakers and education advocates on Wednesday afternoon to talk about the progress the state has made so far on education reform. And she will highlight her goals for the current legislative session.
The governor has proposed a new cabinet-level education department that will bring together the state's various education departments and committees. Gregoire says the new department would streamline the state's preschool through college education policy and give the governor the leadership role she says Washington citizens expect her to have.
Lawmakers have also proposed eliminating the elected position of superintendent of public instruction.
