  • Hardest hit: Dan Boirum on the 1-17

For years after his 2009-10 deployment with the 1-17, Dan Boirum struggled with guilt because he turned away from his best friend, Dan Berchinski, when he was hit by a mine and lost both his legs. Both men have flourished since. Berchinski is finishing an MBA at Stanford and Boirum is working on an MBA at UW and is interning this summer with Columbia Bank in Seattle.
