Thurston County and a state agency are partnering on a project to improve a rail crossing north of Tenino.
The crossing is on 143rd Avenue Southeast near McDuff Road Southeast.
In the past three years, two crashes have been reported at the crossing, and unreported crashes damaged the crossing gates and median barrier.
The state Transportation and Utilities Commission will provide up to $19,800 from a fund for rail safety to replace the median barrier, put up improved signage and install “rumble bars” to alert drivers when they are approaching the crossing. The barrier deters drivers from driving around the gates when they are down.
Never miss a local story.
Thurston County will contribute $22,100 to pave both shoulders through the crossing. The project is set to be finished by January.
