South Sound Democrats plan a celebration of the life of former Thurston County commissioner and long-time advocate Linda Medcalf on Sunday. Medcalf died Dec. 15 after suffering from cancer, according to the Thurston County Democratic Party's announcement of her memorial.
The memorial is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Lacey Presbyterian Church, 3045 Carpenter Road S.E. in Lacey. A reception is scheduled to follow at the Women's Club in downtown Olympia, 1002 Washington St. S.E.
Medcalf, 66, held a doctorate degree in political science from the University of Washington and was active in numerous Democratic causes over several decades – serving as county Democratic chair in 1990-91 and as county commissioner in 1992.
She had participated in several political campaigns, as staff for the state House and Senate campaign committees, and as field director for the state abortion-rights initiative and executive director of the YMCA Youth in Government Program. More recently she taught political science at South Puget Sound Community College and authored “Law and Identity: Native Americans, Lawyers, and the Legal Process” and “Neopolitics: American Political Ideas.”
Never miss a local story.
