Good morning on Day 2 of a 105-day session. Here's what's ahead today:
Gov. Chris Gregoire delivers her State of the State address today at noon to a joint session of the House and Senate. TVW will carry the speech on its cable channels and online. We've been hearing from Gregoire on practically a daily basis about her budget and policy prescriptions, so many of the notes she sounds will no doubt be familiar: that we're in a fix; that state government can't provide the safety net it used to; that she gets voters' anti-tax message.
Republicans will respond to Gregoire's speech. Lawmakers in the GOP minority will talk to reporters afterward.
Committee work begins today in earnest, with 20 meetings scheduled. There will be a series of public hearings before the House Ways and Means Committee and its subcommittees on Gregoire's budget proposal, now in handy 248-page bill form.
