The state Senate has approved $300 million in taxes and a pay increase to people newly claiming unemployment.
Senators approved the bill with a 41-4 vote Friday, marking the end of a week of frenzied negotiations. The bill approved by the Senate was the result of a deal struck among business and labor interests groups and legislators.
The measure halts a scheduled 36 percent jump taxes were going to see in their unemployment taxes. Gov. Chris Gregoire says the bill will save business $300 million in the next year.
The bill also includes a $25 a week pay increase to people claiming unemployment between March and November of this year - a provision labor groups fought for.
Gregoire plans to sign the bill into law Friday afternoon.
