Gov. Chris Gregoire is pushing lawmakers to act on safety enhances for prison guards with a measure that includes recommendations made by an industry government group after a corrections officer was killed at the Monroe Correctional Complex.
The measure requested by Gregoire was introduced Thursday and was heard by a Senate committee the same day.
The bill includes provisions that provide Department of Corrections with the resources it needs to begin pilot programs for new body alarms and pepper spray. It also establishes enhancements for the training prison workers receive and directs the department to examine the placement and use of video surveillance cameras.
No cost estimate was given Thursday.
