Damage reported downtown at council members' businesses
Olympia City Council members Joe Hyer and Jeff Kingsbury think the businesses they operate downtown were targeted by demonstrators in Thursday's unrest.Windows at Hyer's Alpine Experience outdoor gear store were smashed, and anarchist graffiti was left at the store. The back of Kingbury's live downtown theater building was sprayed with an anarchist's symbol, the councilmen said.Hyer said he failed to see how his presence on the council should result in violence."There's no sense to it," said Hyer, who estimated the damage to the windows at between $500 and $1,000.Kingsbury said he's lucky that no windows were broken at his theater."We've shifted from peaceful type of protest to leveraging whatever you can," Kingsbury said. "We (on the council) are the obvious choices to target."Representatives of U.S. Bank and Bank of America, where demonstrators broke windows, refused to comment.
