At least 100 evacuated in Mercato fire

Brian Sandford

About 100 customers and 18 employees were evacuated after a fire Saturday night at Mercato Ristorante.

More than 20 firefighters, two ambulances and six fire trucks — including two from the Lacey Fire Department — were on the scene after the fire, said Greg Wright, the Olympia Fire Department's assistant fire chief. No one was injured, he said.

The fire started above a freezer in the kitchen, Wright said. He estimated the damage at about $30,000. None of the other businesses in the building at 111 Market St. was affected, he said.

Owner Adam Adrian was optimistic Saturday night that the restaurant will be open normal hours for Mother's Day today.

"The good news, it's all concrete floors throughout the restaurant," he said. "I'm going to call my cleaning service to see if they can get down here tonight."

Adrian sent some employees home; others were staying Saturday night to help with cleanup.

"God willing, it doesn't seem as bad as it could have been," Adrian said.
