What is Read for Life?

Read for Life, is a community based literacy program. With support of local business and individual donations, over 2,000 Olympian newspapers per day - Monday through Friday - are available to over 70 schools in 7 school districts throughout Thurston, Mason, Lewis and Grays Harbor Counties.

The mission of the Read for Life program is to develop newspaper readership among young people so they can gain information, make decisions and critically analyze information to form educated opinions.

Using newspapers as a medium, newspaper-based literacy programs positively influence students' motivation, attitude, academic skills and communication.

Newspapers are current, relevant and more personal than textbooks. When used to supplement state-mandated curriculum, they can assist teachers to transcend learning from beyond the classroom to the community in which students live.
