There is no way to deny it anymore. Computer technology is part of everyday life. Maybe it is the small computer in your hand that happens to make phone calls, the tablet you are reading your e-edition and watching videos on or your car’s touchscreen you swear is smarter than you sometimes.
Now, they are finding their rightful place in the classroom — even in kindergarten.
Lena Whitmore Elementary School teacher Lacey Watkins recently told the Daily News about her push to bring technology into her kindergarten classroom not only for her use, but for her students and their parents.
With ClassDojo, similar to a Facebook feed, Watkins is able to post photos, newsletters and feedback on the day’s activities to connect with parents at the touch of a button.

Now, parents know what school events to ask about at the dinner table each night and can communicate more easily with teachers when something comes up.
But it doesn’t stop there. Watkins also gets the students involved, playing videos during snack time or in between activities related to their lessons that day. She assigns one student each week to create a video to post on the class’s website to show what they have done that week from the kindergartner’s perspective.
While it is important for students to not lose the fundamentals – learning to read and write, expressing themselves in music and art, having time to run around the playground and doing things that test their fine motor and social skills – there is just as great a need in today’s world for students to start learning as early as possible how these technologies work.
