Initiative 1, an income tax in Olympia, is not as its portrayed and I encourage a no vote.
Initiative 1 is a ruse. It is a test by those outside our community to determine whether today’s Supreme Court would find a city-based income tax legal. As of early October, nearly all of the funding to pass Initiative 1 (97 percent) had come from King County.
Initiative 1 would be expensive. If it passes there will be a long court case at the expense of the tax payers of Olympia. It will take money from vital city services, services our community makes a priority —parks and recreation, economic and community development, culture diversity, infrastructure, safety, the environment and others.
Initiative 1 is illegal. There is a specific state law that forbids cities from collecting income taxes. The legislature would have to repeal this law for the initiative to work, even if today’s Supreme Court overruled past decisions about income taxes.
Initiative 1 is impossible. The IRS will not share tax information with the city. Therefore, all taxpayers would have to submit copies of their tax returns for the city to know who owes the tax. Yet, there’s no penalty if people don’t submit the information, so it’s unenforceable.
Don’t let King County interests use us. Keep Olympia’s precious tax dollars serving our community members, not being spent in court. Vote no for Initiative 1.
