The Electoral College is a very messed up system for many reasons. Let's start with how some States have more say based on the size. Also in 24 states their electors can vote for whoever they want. Lastly, the people running for president only need to spend time in Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
The States that have more power in the Electoral College are the smaller States. Take the biggest state California (55 Electors) and take the smallest state Wyoming (3). California has a population of 39,497,345 and Wyoming has a population of 587,910 as of 2016. That gives Wyoming an Elector for every 195,970 people, while California gets an Elector for every 718,134 people.
There is no federal law that states you have to vote for who your state chooses in the election. You could vote for somebody who is not even running in the race. That has happened 157 times in an election. In 24 of our states, electors can vote for who they want without even getting fined.
Since it is a winner take all system in all but two of the states the presidential nominee only needs to spend time in Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania because they are the biggest swing states and every other state is a guarantee for a single party.
Never miss a local story.
These reasons alone state that the Electoral College needs to be changed. I propose that we insert a the person with the most votes wins.
