Donald Trump is opening the door to authoritarianism and inviting us in. All Americans, regardless of party affiliation, must reject that invitation.
Buildings collapse if their foundations are undermined. The same is true of democracies. The undermining of democracies occurs when leaders use fear to pit groups against each other, continuously lie, place self-interest above the nation, and disrespect institutions such as our free press and our courts. Trump is doing all of these things. Past presidents have occasionally engaged in such behaviors, but Trump is doing them at entirely new levels.
Some of what Trump is doing is unprecedented. He is using the presidency to line his own pockets. His staff push family products. He sells access and profits from contacts with other countries
It remains to be seen how far the Trump campaign went in collaborating with the Russians, but what we have seen is alarming. Trump is dismissive of investigations into the matter and has fired individuals, including his FBI director, who were seeking the truth. His son eagerly sought “dirt” on Hillary Clinton from a representative of the Russian government.
Most of Congress, which is charged with protecting us from presidential abuse, is placing partisanship above patriotism. Fortunately, many in the press, most Democrats and a few Republicans are sounding the alarm.
Ultimately, it is the people of a great country that is the best protection against tyranny. All of us should recognize what is at risk, speak against presidential abuse and elect those who truly value our democracy.
